In their own words: Dr. Zoltan Kovacs

How did you get in contact with Medicolink?
"I was not searching for opportunities to travel and work abroad at all. A partner of Medicolink actually told me about the possibilities and chances of working in Denmark. We had a chat about the procedure and I soon found myself in the middle of a meeting with Tue Sand Larsen, one of the leading partners at the agency. It was his positive attitude and honest, straightforward manner that convinced and actually motivated me to take part in the program. He visualized a complex procedure from the beginning of the training to my first completed year at my future workplace".

What about your new job?
"As far as my career was concerned, it was important for me not to start from a lower level position than what I was already possessing in Hungary, this of course was granted. Furthermore, the Danish hospital also offered opportunities for conducting research which made me very excited. When I visited the hospital in Denmark, I saw that their research centre was functioning well which meant that I would not have to start from scratch but I could simply become part of an ongoing project".
"They will let me work using my own initiative but at the same time lend me a helping hand initially if I do not feel completely comfortable working alone. They actually had a career plan for me for the forthcoming 1.5 years. This was very satisfactory for me because it displayed a combination of trust and patience".

What does Medicolink offer you and your family?
"Medicolink provides me with learning opportunities, their program covers language, culture and other important things. I found the offer financially attractive too. I can now definetely provide a good standard of living for my family without having to work extra. Perhaps, more importantly the fact that my wife and daughter also take part in a Danish course at the weekends gives us a feeling of security not only as far as language is concerned but generally we feel that we are being prepared for our stay in Denmark and we get a clear idea about what we can expect".
Dr. Kovacs is currently attending the training programme and will start his new career at a Danish hospital very soon.

Imagining my new life in Denmark

By David Kiss, Hungarian dentist
March 2011

When My partner and I made our decision, to continue our lives in Denmark, we had gathered considerable information about the opportunities that existed both in Hungary and elsewhere. Neither could offer any noticeable opportunities that caught my interest. Then I received an email about a job opportunity in Denmark. It was something fresh and different, something exciting. Now I am attending a language course, and in two weeks we are moving to Denmark.

Expectations for the future
At my workplace in Hungary, I treated tense and impatient patients, who always worried about how they would make ends meet economically. The patient's took their everyday problems with them into the dental chair and this resulted in them choosing the quickest and cheapest interventions, which usually meant only a temporary solution. To me, this did not offer sufficient professional challenges.
I only have a few Danish experiences in relation to how Danish patients behave, but my first experiences have been wonderful. Patients were patient, friendly, and nice and they were in a good mood.

Many Hungarian doctors, like me, are looking for a job within a functioning system in which everyone solves their tasks well. We are looking for a workplace, where there is a liberating mood, where working conditions are friendly. In addition, the predictable future and the competitive salary are also important. In Denmark you can find everything.

I grew up in the countryside next to a large forest, where my parents worked in the local forestry. My childhood was lovely. I really wish a good and stable childhood for my children as well, but I think, that this is very hard to realize in Hungary at this time.

It's hard for me to imagine life in Denmark, but I think this is the place where I can fulfil my dreams. Our dream has always been to live in a scenic village on the coast, a bay or an ocean, close to nature. I also dream of a house with a huge garden and a garage.

Leisure time and children in Denmark
I hope that we will have time and opportunity to enjoy our leisure time. I'd like to go fishing after work, especially in the summer when the days are longer and the evenings warmer. These long summer nights allow for grilling meat, fish and vegetables along with our friends.

Of course we also want children. For children, Denmark is nice too. Nurseries and kindergartens are well organized, and the school system is highly developed.

It will be hard for me not to be a member of a sports club, so I think I will join a fishing club and a local football club, as I like to play football. I cannot see into the future, but I am very optimistic.

The language course
The language course is a big challenge for me, because I have to study every day again and train my brain with unaccustomed science. I have not studied languages for 15 years, so it is a great challenge for me, but I enjoy it. It is a lot of fun to do something else.

The teachers are highly motivated, energetic and responsible. There are four different teachers, teaching in four different areas, in which they are very skilled. All of the teachers are well informed and we can ask them about Denmark freely, because they have personal experiences from living in Denmark.

We also have lessons concerning the historical and cultural aspects of Denmark. I often feel like I am already in Denmark.

I know my Danish language skills have developed greatly, since I began the language course. The results we have achieved are greater, than I would have ever hoped for. Yet, I still think the most challenging thing is the Danish language.
